About Us

The Academy's Therapist Section, the Therapy Leadership Council in Spinal Cord Injury, is a professional network for therapists who work with individuals with spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D). Physical therapists, occupational therapists, and kinesiotherapists in acute spinal cord injury rehabilitation face unique management issues within the health-care system. They are challenged to provide quality rehabilitation in an increasingly complex and diverse health-care setting. Rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury has grown in complexity and scope as advances in the field of applied technologies and rehabilitation science have been translated into clinical practice. Unique rehabilitation issues and durable equipment needs are common to persons with SCI/D who have lifelong challenges in maintaining their independence and quality of life. We promote research, education, and the development of clinical practice guidelines, as well as identifying professional mentors. We strive to improve clinical skills and encourage standardized evidence-based practice methods throughout the continuum of care in order to maximize functional outcomes in individuals with SCI/D.

Goals

  • Provide an advanced level educational experience for SCI therapists.
  • Promote continuing education, essential to professional growth and excellence in clinical practice.
